Yowayowa, also known as Natsumi Hayashi, is a Japanese photographer. She mainly photographs levitating self-portraits, she lives with her two cats which she sometimes includes in her photos. Yowayowa uses a self timer and tripod to capture herself levitating. She especially chooses to use backgrounds that you would see in your everyday life, she uses objects in her images to make the image seem more normal, which contrasts with the fact that she's levitating.
Yowayowa trains her body especially to be able to make her arms and legs go into these positions, she uses a shutter speed of 1/500th of a second or faster.
Yowayowa trains her body especially to be able to make her arms and legs go into these positions, she uses a shutter speed of 1/500th of a second or faster.
In the first image Yowayowa is hovering over a water fountain in a train station, I think that the colours in this image work really well because her clothes match her surroundings, this gives off a calm feeling because of the light colours that are used . She's to the left of the frame, this catches your attention because the station is quite empty, there are a few key items that stand out, such as the fountain and the clock. Yowayowa levitating next to these items with her arms and legs positioned like they are, makes the image seem very surreal but also interesting.
In the second image Yowayowa is in a house, hovering over a hoover. She's in the centre of the frame, therefore you automatically look at the position she's in. Her legs are angled, and the black clothes stand out from the brown decor in the background. In the image there are everyday items and she's in a normal house with a normal background, this gives the impression that she's in a completely ordinary setting which is why levitation looks out of place but also intriguing. The mood given off from this picture is quite neutral because of the brown colours and natural lighting, I think that this image is very effective because of the contrast between an everyday life and levitating in the middle of that, which seems dreamlike.

In these images, the people levitating are reading, this is because it seems very normal to look at and to be doing, but they're levitating which makes them stand out. These images all have a variety of different colours and settings which contrast which the fact that they're in the air. To do this I used a shutter speed of 1/500th of a second or faster in order to capture the image while in motion.

I tried to create a zoom blur image on photoshop. Firstly I chose a picture that I took and clicked filter at the top of the page, then I clicked on blur and chose radial blur. I put this onto 100% and moved the centre of the blur to match the focus point.

These are my zoom blur images, I used a shutter speed of 1/4th of a second in order to have time to zoom in while the picture was being taken. I used f/22) to allow a slow enough shutter speed. Doing this caused a zoom blur effect - but you have to control how much you zoom, if it's too much the subject will look too blurred. I used a low ISO to increase motion blur and took 24 pictures of different objects/settings that had different features and colours.

This image is of London at night, the bright pink colour contrasts against the black and white lights, the white stands out causing it to be the main focal point. The photo is purposely blurred as that is Harris's style of photography and I like how it makes the colours merge together, but it also makes the focus point less obvious. This specific location has been chosen to capture London at night, and I think the colours and lights show the intention clearly, also the blurred motion makes the image look 'alive' - which describes it well. The image has been taken at an angle which makes the photo look two toned and realistic. A long exposure has been used to allow the blurring.

London, Park - This photo contains blurred trees in a park, the main focal point is the large tree in the centre of the composition. The green textured leaves contrast with the smooth blue sky in the background. I like the way the top of the trees all blend into each other because it makes the image feel more coherent and the attention has been drawn to the centre tree so the blur is noticeable throughout the image. It gives the illusion that the tree is never ending because of the amount blur and the viewpoint of the photographer. Natural light has been used well in this image as it is outdoors, the colours are clear and there is no sign of manipulation or artificial light.

This image consists of two blurred buildings, the main focal point is the building in the foreground as you can see the blurry features better than the one in the background. The lines and windows being blurred gives the impression that they are infinite, which is done by the exposure being long enough to capture movement - but not too long that is distorts the photo. I think that the location has been chosen to represent the modern structures that London obtains, because London is often associated with landmarks and famous buildings. Dominic has positioned his viewpoint so that the buildings are on the left of the composition and you can see the blue sky, which is effective because it's not the usual 'centred subject' composition.

B R A D L E Y G A R R E T T This photo was taken by Bradley Garrett, in West Bank Mill Tailrace Tunnels, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. In the photo there is a man inside a tunnel surrounded by red and green lines of light trails. The main focal point of this image are the lights, this is because they're in the center of the frame and stand out against the dark tunnel. The photograph was taken from behind the man, which allows you to see the reflection of the light on the water, and the angles and shapes made from it. The picture has been taken head on so you are able to see the whole scene, and you can see how sharp and defined all aspects of the photo are. |
N A D A V K A N D E R This image is by Nadav Kander, in this photo you can clearly see one man, with the motion of his moving head. He is in the centre of the frame with a pale blue background, which makes him stand out. This photograph shows that the subject is moving his head, by having his surroundings and body sharp and still, while seeing two sides of his face, which are blurry. The man's facial expression combined with the blurry motion effect creates a sinister mood, this is also due to the black hair contrasting with the light shirt and background. The attention has been drawn to one person tho emphasise the image and movement. |
I D R I S K A H N In this black and white image produced by Idris Kahn, you can see the movement of a man lying down to standing up. The main focal point of this photo is the phase where the man is lying down, this is because it stands out the most as it contrasts with the black background. I think that this image is effective because it looks quite old because of the texture, and you can see the transition of the positions as they start off white and slowly fade as he stands up. A dark mood is created because of the black, white and grey colours used, and it looks slightly eerie because of how the motion is shown. |

In this image there is a woman behind a layer of circular shapes, there are many hands in this image, including a large black hand. The large hand is in the centre of the image, and the main focal point is the circular frame surrounding the woman and the hands. There are many shapes in this image including circles and ovals, a dark mood is created by the focus drawn to the woman because of the black corners and faded edges of the round frame. Also because the woman's face is neutral and the texture makes the image look very old and eerie. In addition to this the dark mood is created by the photograph being in sepia and the large black hand seems like something out of a horror movie. There are many blurred ares around the outside of the image. This is a key feature in Francesca Woodman's work as she tends to blur the background but keep the subject in full focus. By doing this her aim is to draw attention to the main subject but also creating an ominous effect by having different objects in the blurred part of the photo.

This photographs contains a blurred subject moving towards the ground in an empty room. The main focal point of this image is the person moving. This is because the room is empty which instantly draws your attention to the only thing in the room. It also draws your attention in because of the blurred parts, the subject is to the left of the frame, and this seems a little less structured than a subject being in the centre of the frame because the picture doesn't seem as authentic. The moving subject being in the left of the frame gives the blur more attention as it moves slightly more into the centre. The image is in black and white which creates a creepy mood, especially because the room is bare, and the person is wearing black. As you can't see any features of the subject, and he/she is in a strange position, it gives the photograph a mysterious feel to it.

In this photograph there is a door standing on one corner at an unusual angle, there is light coming through one window which shines behind the door onto a person curled up under it. The main focal point of this image is the door, this is because it is dark and stands out against the light and colour of the wall. This image is very strange because objects/people are positioned unusually, for example the door is in the middle of the frame , but is leaned against the wall, and there is the bottom half of a person showing underneath. The focus is drawn to the centre of the image and this is because of the sharpness of it. The light shines off the person's leg and is shown very clearly because it is in focus. There is an obvious pattern in Woodman's photos and that is that most of her photo's look slightly scary. This is because of the sharp focal points and blurred surrounding areas, showing movement or bold aspects of the photo, and also because they're in black and white or sepia.

These images were taken with a slow shutter speed, to capture the movement so the subject was blurry. I placed the camera on a wall to keep it still so that the background could be in focus. I used corners and corridors to try and make the effect of the composition more like Francesca Woodman's work and changed the effect on my third response to black and white for the same reason.

To take these photos I used a shutter speed of 1/4 which caused the effect of the background being blurred in motion while the moving subject stayed in focus, To do this the subject ran across a corridor while I stayed still but followed the direction she was running with the camera, which left this effect.

Michael Bosanko is a Welsh photographer who uses coloured flashlights to create 'light paintings'. He has been using a technique he calls light graffiti in his work since 2004, when he accidentally discovered it. He uses a slow shutter shutter speed to be able to capture the light movement. The exposure time varies from 10 seconds to an hour, as this time length is most successful. I prefer Bosanko's photographs with figures as the subject and I will use these as inspiration for my work.
In this image of a flower painted on a beach, Bosanko uses colours in the painting of the flower, to match with the sunset. The flower is in the centre of the image which contrasts the dark rocks with the bright green light, and the bright red head of the flower instantly catches your eye, as it stands out and it in the middle of the photograph. Bosanko uses a long exposure time in order for the details to be painted and the whole picture is in focus because a tripod has been used.

This photograph consists of lights that have been painted in the form of grass inside a tunnel. The image is very busy as there is a lot of light in every direction and has a dominating colour of green, but it also contains blue, red, purple and pink. The main focal point of the photo is the high concentration of green light on the left, which is in focus and it is reflected on the walls of the tunnel.

This image contains a light painting of a dinosaur on a bridge. The painting takes up most of the image and stands out as the background is dark. Green is the only colour used, and this contrasts with the red in the distance, and the overall darkness of the image. This photograph is very simple but is still effective as the thin paint lines of the dinosaur is noticeable and stands out

Light painting is a form of photography using light. In order to create this effect you need to be in the dark so that the lights will show and use a tripod to keep the image in focus. Firstly you need to set your camera onto manual mode. The shutter speed has to be very long, for these images I used a shutter speed of 10 seconds, this is so that you have time to paint with the light while the picture is being taken. In order to increase the shutter speed, a higher f-stop can be used to increase the length. Then you have to move in front of the camera and draw shapes or images and the result will be shown in the photos.

I chose these 6 images as my best photos, this is because I think they show what I did well for each section, and are most like the result I hoped for.
My favorite task was either the light painting, because it was creative, it was fun experimenting and I hadn't done anything like that before - or the Francesca Woodman images, this is because they were unique, none of the other techniques were eerie like Woodman's and I enjoyed recreating them. My least favorite task was levitation, this is because it was quite hard to capture the movement clearly and it was difficult to make the levitating look natural. However I used props, took the photos in natural environments and tried to take the images while the subject was levitating. I enjoyed this topic as I learnt more techniques and liked capturing movement in various ways.
